Summary:
Direct, plan, supervise and control all aspects of plant purchasing operations to include; capital expenditures, budgetary controls. Responsible for purchasing materials, supplies and services; selecting sources; maintaining purchase records; contacting suppliers; using result in a variance. Assist other departments when necessary in searching for new sources, products and developments. Review mechanical requisitions and take required actions. Negotiate with suppliers on quality, warranty, price and delivery problems. Develop and supervise a competent purchasing staff capable of purchasing materials, supplies and services in the best interest of Smithfield Farmland.

Responsibilities:
Responsible for evaluating the performance of personnel in the Purchasing Department. This individual recommends training requirements, has the duty to keep staff at the highest level of skill necessary to meet company needs and objectives, and may recommend that personnel be hired or removed from the department.
Implement internal control procedures that protect and secure the assets of the corporation and that preclude misappropriation of funds or assets.
Compile internal reports, revise and update reports as necessary.
Review and implement changes to the requisitioning/purchasing system for Farmland Foods that improves responsiveness, provides dollar savings through volume and blanket purchases and that meets the needs of the facility with timely delivery of materials, supplies and services.
Receive and timely analyze (using the value analysis approach) requests for purchases of materials, supplies and services; determine vendor source; process requisition; provide for monitoring receipt and providing status to requesting department.
Negotiate with suppliers quality, warranty, price and delivery so that Farmland Foods pays only for actual value of supplies or services received.
Manage and control leased equipment for the company.
Monitor an inventory control system for materials, services and mechanical parts that insures adequate levels for continuous operations while at the same time maintains inventory at a level that uses a just-in-time purchase and delivery process.
Provide both written and verbal reports on all problems/opportunities that occur in your area of responsibility to include actions being taken to correct, or a recommended action plan with a timetable for achieving.
Develop a collaborative relationship with those you need to maintain good rapport in order to successfully accomplish your job.

B.S. Degree. Must have a minimum of five (5) years experience ideally gained through increasingly responsible management positions within a purchasing department.
Minimum of three (3) years recent experience as a Purchasing Agent at a high speed/volume fresh meat or further processing facility.
Well developed management skills utilizing sound management principles in leading a team of employees.
Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information
and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.
Planning, organization, and execution skills.
Knowledge of SAP system, Internet, Microsoft Word Processing and Excel spreadsheets.
Proven cost savings history within purchasing.
Strong negotiation skills.

Schedule - generally nine (9) or more hours/day, Monday thru Friday and weekends as scheduled.
